Five sessions of phenomenal physics will be brought to you by the brightest lights in the field at Physics in Action ONLINE in May!  Join us for a day full of inspiration, challenge and experimentation across the breadth of physics. A special session on examination success will provide students with the tools to excel, and there will be plenty of interactivity throughout the day – prepare for polls, quizzes and putting your questions to the scientists at Physics in Action!

The First stars: Unveiling the first billion years of our Universe Emma Chapman, University of Nottingham

Astronomers have observed a lot of the Universe’s history, from imaging galaxies to visualising an actual black hole. We are missing the first one billion years from the timeline of the Universe though, and we are about to unveil it…

Emma Chapman is an astrophysicist at Imperial College London. She is a world-leading researcher in search of the first stars to exist in our Universe. Emma contributes regularly to television and radio and has written a popular science book, ‘First light’.

Consultant Medical Physicist Dr Heather Williams will give us a ‘behind the scenes’ view of what these scientists get up to, with a particular focus on her own work on Nuclear Medicine imaging.

Thunderbolts and lightning – are they really frightening? Rhys Phillips, Airbus Group

Rhys will show what happens to aircraft when hit by lightning and explain how we protect against this. He will show exactly what happens in his lightning lab and discuss whether a piggy bank can survive a lightning strike?!
