Back by popular demand! Following a tremendous programme in July 2020, Medicine in Action returns with a special half-day online programme for aspiring medics. We will welcome a new cast of speakers from a range of specialities, all with incredible personal and professional stories to tell. Uncover the science and technology driving medicine, discuss the societal implications and find out what life is really like as a medic as we explore the field, culminating in an “I’m a medic, ask me anything” panel session.

About Dr Alex Alamri
Alex Alamri is a Neurosurgery trainee in London with an interest in medical education. He is also a YouTuber (Brainbook) exploring all things brain and spine surgery.

Ed Hope is an emergency medicine doctor junior doctor. For the last 3 year he has been the Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow training medical students from Barts and The London and Anglia Ruskin in Chelmsford Before medicine he worked in advertising by day and a musician by night.
Making Faces Felicity Mehendale, University of Edinburgh
Globally, every 3 minutes, 1 baby is born with a cleft (lip or palate). If untreated, babies can face difficulty in feeding, breathing and speaking. We will follow their journey from antenatal diagnosis to adulthood and the care needed from a wide range of clinicians. We will also look at how working with data scientists, mathematicians, computer vision and AI colleagues can help make surgery better.
About Dr Felicity Mehendale
Felicity is a Plastic, Reconstructive and Cleft Surgeon and leads the Global Cleft Lip and Palate Research Programme at The University of Edinburgh. She is president of the International Confederation of Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies and the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
