Programme & speakers

Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics Bobby Seagull MBE, Teacher, Author and Broadcaster

A fast-paced, interactive look at how data can deceive, misrepresent, and manipulate, equipping students with the critical maths skills to spot statistical tricks in media and advertising.

Bobby Seagull MBE

About Bobby Seagull MBE

Bobby is a former investment banker, chartered accountant and social entrepreneur turned maths teacher, author & TV broadcaster. After going viral on BBC’s University Challenge, he champions maths wherever he goes – from presenting BBC’s Monkman & Seagull Genius Guides (discussed trigonometry on prime time) to addressing the House of Lords (state of maths education) and even appearing on Netflix dating show Indian Matchmaking (teaching his Year 8 maths class).

The Doodle Theorem Colin Wright, Mathematician and Juggler

A well-known activity is to present a line diagram and challenge people to recreate it without lifting their pencil off the paper, and without retracing a line. In this workshop we start with this, and then find some deeper results and some surprising connections.

Colin Wright

About Dr Colin Wright

Colin received his maths doctorate in 1990 from Cambridge University. While at Cambridge he also learned how to fire-breathe, unicycle, juggle and ballroom dance.

Palindrome Ages Kat Phillips, Innovation Research Associate and Maths Communicator, University of Warwick

The year I turned 26, my mum turned 62 – a reversible pair! A fun coincidence or mathematics hiding in plain sight? I’ll show you how to check your own age (and everyone else’s) for a reversible pair too.

Kat Phillips

About Dr Kat Phillips

Kat is a mathematician at University of Warwick working with the Centre for Applications of Mathematics & Computer Science. When she’s not doing research, you can find her promoting maths on twitch, and having conversations about STEM in everyday life.

What do they know? Epistemic logic in games Jamie Frost, Chief Mathematician at Dr Frost Learning

Ever wondered what other people know, and if what they know you know? You likely know we can use algebra to represent values like numbers and sets, but what about representing knowledge? In this talk, we look at the ingredients needed to represent beliefs and announcements, and how we can formally make deductions with games like Cluedo and with party hats! And perhaps a paradox or two thrown in for fun.

Jamie Frost

About Dr Jamie Frost

Jamie is the founder and Chief Mathematician at Dr Frost Learning, providing resources for mathematics teaching and an online homework setting platform. Catch him on TikTok for everything from ‘What mathematically is the squarest country?’ to Fibonacci numbers in running.

TBC Merry Martyn, Clinical Trials Statistician, King's College London

Exciting talk details to follow soon…

Merry Martyn

About Dr Merry Martyn

Merry has a Medical Statistics PhD and works at King’s College London analysing clinical trials. Can antidepressants be used as a preventative measure? Can coaching reduce reoffending rates? She uses statistics to answer these questions every day.
